Key Biscayne’s Humble Beginnings

During the first half of the first half of the 20th century, the northern two-thirds of Key Biscayne Island are utilized to operate as the largest coconut plantation in the whole United States. However, there have been many plans for the island to develop a residential town, it was not until 1947 that the island was opened to large scale residential development. It was after the Rickenbacker Causeway was opened to become a medium to get to Miami to Virginia Key and on to the Key Biscayne. This breakthrough development to the island became the gateway for commercial development to take place in the island. After a US Post Office and church communities was established, the island was opened to investors who developed beach resorts, hotels, condominiums, and entertainment and leisure parks.
