History Of Kendall Suburban Zone

Kendall was previously called Rockdale. The place was bought by the Florida Land and Mortgage Company in 1883. The place was renamed after Henry John Broughton Kendall. He was the director of the company that purchased the lands and moved to the place in the early 1900s. The place experienced slow development in the 1900s because during these times homesteading is not yet allowed in the region. Although some establishments started to develop in the area, Kendall still experienced slow progress due to the end of land boom and the damaged it incurred from the hurricane. It is in the start of the 20th century that the place recovered completely and undergone major developments leading to the establishment of airports, schools, residential communities, and other major infrastructures.

Kendall Lifestyle

As the place started to develop, Kendall was turned into a residential community. With its proximity to downtown Miami, a lot of people prefer to have permanent or temporary residence in this area and commute to the central district for their workplace. There are also a lot of employment sources in Kendall like retail, hospitals, restaurant, various business establishments, and schools.

Some of the most popular residents of Kendall are Janet Reno, the first woman appointed as Attorney General and the 2nd longest serving Attorney General in the country, and O.J. Simpson, a popular American actor and football player.

Kendall area is also popular for its high performing schools such as the Devon Aire Elementary at the Devon Aire neighborhood. This elementary school gained the highest score in the statewide FCAT exam or the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test in the whole Miami-Dade County. For families with college students, Miami Dade College is also located in this unincorporated district of Miami-Dade County.

Health Care Facilities

For health needs, the Baptist Hospital is also operating in Kendall. The US News and World Report awarded Baptist Hospital as one of the best regional hospitals in the country in their 2013-2014 report.

Destinations

For leisure and recreational destinations, Kendall is also proud to have one of the finest zoos in the country as their main attraction, which is the Miami Metro Zoo. Miami Metro Zoo boasts some of the most diverse collections of animals especially its world-class aviary and the popular but very rare White Bengal Tigers. The whole facility covers about 290 acres of land, which are composed of forest, jungles, and trails.

There are already more than 2,000 animals from 240 different animal species that are now being taken care of in this zoo. The best part about the zoo is that it provides animals, especially wild ones a free to roam land, which is surrounded by protective dikes.

Another main attraction in Kendall is the Gold Coast Railroad Museum, which is just located within the Miami Metro Zoo. The museum imposes affordable entrance and tour fees educating visitors about the history of South Florida railroads. Residents and visitors can also visit the Everglades National Park, an ecological destination providing nature activities as well as tourism events.

There are also a lot of movie theaters and cafes that are great to visit during the weekends and holidays after a busy week in the metropolitan area.
